Water rights are not for sale

Published: Tuesday, July 23, 2013 1:15 a.m. CST

I'm an American citizen of 87 years and have lived in this city for 60 years. I paid the taxes all of those years.

My deed states that I own every inch of this land. The city leaders passed an ordinance that states they can steal my water rights, and they did everything by mail.

They didn't have the guts to talk with us well owners, and they used the U.S. mail to threaten us. Some of us well owners are veterans. It doesn't mean a darn thing to these people, Madigan, Bustos and Jacobs, as they didn't have time for us. Why do we pay these people?

You people will hear from the good Lord. You don't do this kind of thing to American people.

Note to readers: Art Pope lives on Bennett Drive and owns his own well.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
