Prison punishment unequal among prisoners

Published: Thursday, July 25, 2013 1:15 a.m. CST

What the public may not understand about prison discipline is that punishment is based more on who you are than on what you do.

If an informant or liked prisoner violate the same rule I violated, he will receive a warning. Since I write about issues with Dixon prison, I have been categorized as a “pain” and “agitator.” Therefore, no warning given for me for a minor offense.

Dixon prison staff has a history of retaliating against prisoners for standing up for their rights. In federal law books, I know at least three appellate cases won for retaliation since 2000 at Dixon prison.

Overall, Dixon prison is better than most. Some officers, 10 to 15 percent, need to learn to treat all prisoners with respect and dignity as officers want to be treated and as commanded by their code of conduct.

I believe I [am] singled out for excessive punishment because I write articles for this newspaper and have a lawsuit against Dixon prison. Injustice to one grows to injustice for all.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
