ROCK ISLAND – Jury selection for Nicholas Sheley’s third murder trial now is set to begin Jan. 10 in Rock Island County Court.

Opening arguments are set to start 11 days later.

The trial of the twice-convicted murderer, who turns 34 on July 31, was to have begun Oct. 15, but defense attorney Jeremy Karlin requested a delay because, he said in court documents, his DNA expert needs more time to analyze the 20 pieces of evidence submitted by the state.

Sheley will stand trial for the deaths of Brock Branson, 29; his fiancée Kilynna Blake, 20; her 2-year-old son, Dayan; and Kenneth Ulve, 25, who were killed in Rock Falls 5 years ago.

He already is serving life without parole for the murders of Ronald Randall, 65, of Galesburg and Russell Reed, 93, of rural Sterling.

Sheley has appealed the decision in the Randall case.
