Boys charged with arson in P-town fire

STERLING – The two half-brothers accused of setting fire to downtown Prophetstown were charged this morning with residential arson and criminal damage to property, both felonies.

The 12-year-old, who is from New York, will be under home detention 24-7 at his father's house in Prophetstown. The 16-year-old, who is from Wisconsin, will remain at the Mary Davis Home, a juvenile detention facility in Galesburg.

Both boys and several family members were at the hearing in Whiteside County Court in Sterling.

Investigators say the boys set a fire in a recycle bin behind Cindy Jean's Restaurant around 2 a.m. Monday; the subsequent fire destroyed at least eight buildings, damaged two others and left more than  half a dozen people homeless.

The 16-year-old has a court hearing at 10 a.m. July 23; the 12-year-old has a hearing at 11 a.m. July 30.
