Another opinion on peat mining

Published: Saturday, July 20, 2013 1:15 a.m. CST

Maybe Sandra Hamm (July 10 letter, “Peat mining: Consider the bigger picture”) should have done a little more research before she bought her home. The peat companies have been doing business down there for many, many years. Trucks have traveled those roads long before she even had a thought of moving there.

Having to sweep your patio? Really? Find something else to complain about. You say no big deal about 30 to 50 jobs. I hope you have a big house, so all those families can move in and you can support them, since their jobs aren’t that important.

You worry about all the prime farmland being lost. Maybe you should buy it up if it is that important to you. These people are just trying to make a living, just like everyone else.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
