Panel reaches out to Rock Falls for further study of government

DIXON – The governmental task force hopes to meet with a Rock Falls city official or member of its City Council to talk about the mayor-council form of government on Wednesday.

The seven-member task force was appointed by Mayor Jim Burke to make a recommendation on what form of government is best for Dixon. They have talked with city officials from Sterling, Rochelle, Ottawa, East Peoria and Dixon – focusing primarily on the commission form of government with an administrator versus the city manager form.

Resident Li Arellano suggested the panel examine the mayor-council form in more detail, which is in practice in Rock Falls. The mayor-council form strips the council of department oversight, but allows it to create a city administrator position.

This form was recommended by an advisory committee in Ottawa decades ago, when that city took a similar look at its form of government.

Members plan to debate and discuss further before making up their minds in August.

The meeting will be held at 9 a.m. at City Hall, 121 W. Second St.
