One of the band's drums was among the clothing, shoes and instruments that littered the side of the road.

LYNDON – A 19-year-old man was killed and six people were injured Monday afternoon when a van carrying the Utah band Dark Seas overturned on Interstate 88 about 3 miles east of Lyndon.

The van was eastbound around 1 p.m. when the driver, Colton Elliot, 23, fell asleep at the wheel and lost control, Whiteside County Sheriff Kelly Wilhelmi said.

The Dodge Ram 3500 traveled about 1,000 feet before rolling several times and landing on its side.

Colton Ericksen, 19, of West Jordan, Utah, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the van and died at the scene.

The others were taken to CGH Medical Center in Sterling with unknown injuries, Wilhelmi said.

Both lanes of eastbound I-88 were closed just west of the Morrison exit while the scene was processed, then reopened.

Elliot was charged with improper driving on the shoulder; other charges may be pending, the sheriff said in a news release.

According to its Facebook page, the Salt Lake City band played Sioux City, Iowa, Sunday night and was en route to a show in Chicago on Monday night.

Ericksen was a guitarist in the band.

The other passengers were Samuel C. Giles and Joseph W. Sandmire, both 18 and of South Jordan; Kyle G. Wilcox, 28, of San Diego; Irvin Martinez, 22, of Sandy, Utah, and Rhett T. Hansen, 23, of Draper, Utah.

Wilcox is the band’s lead singer, Martinez the bass player, and Hansen the drummer.

The eighth occupant, Diego Mijares, 24, also of Sandy, was not injured. Mijares is a guitarist in the band.
