STERLING – Joseph S. Gassman, 80, of Sterling, died Sunday, July 14, 2013, at his home.
Joseph was born July 2, 1933, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Henry A. and Catherine L. (O’Hea) Gassman. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He married Mary J. Hynes on May 15, 1964, in Dubuque. She preceded him in death on Sept. 25, 1984. He then married Valerie Griffin on Jan. 3, 1986, in Sterling. He was employed by Northwestern Steel and Wire Co. in Sterling for 34 years.
Joseph was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling, where he attended morning Mass and had a devoted prayer life. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 11874 of Rock Falls, and a 4th Degree Knight. He was a Eucharistic minister for the shut-ins. He was active in the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, walking his dog Paddington, chopping wood, riding his scooter, and picking up his grandchildren from school.
Survivors include his wife, Valerie Gassman of Sterling; three daughters, Jane Gassman of Rock Falls, Teresa (Matt) Gingrich of Sterling, and Debra (John) Sylvestri of Fort Wayne, Ind.; one son, Stephen (Debbie) Gassman of Sterling; eight grandchildren, Antonio Gassman, Zachary Gassman, Mary Kate Gassman, Duncan Gingrich, Sean Gingrich, Megan Gingrich, Andrew Sylvestri, and James Sylvestri; and two brothers, William (Sandy) Gassman of Dubuque and Thomas (Sandy) Gassman of Epworth, Iowa.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Louise Gassman.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m, with the rosary recited at 3:45 p.m., Wednesday at McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls. Visitation also will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, with the Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling. Cremation rites will be accorded.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry; Newman Central Catholic High School; and St. Mary Catholic Church or School.
