Mimi Boysen and Terry Dunphy will not be playing in this year's Women's Lincoln Highway golf tournament because of illness. Their teammates will try to pick up the slack.
Boysen and Dunphy helped Timber Creek of Dixon to a strong second-place showing in the tournament last year. Only four of the eight members of that team return. But, the cupboard is far from bare.
"The team that's playing has played in the past," said 70-year-old Kay Miller, one of the team's returning players. "Sure, we miss the ones that aren't there. We'll play for them."
"We've got a fair team. We've got a shot at second place," said Carla Hill, 60, who returns to the team after not playing in the LHT the past few years.
Second to Kishwaukee, that is. Timber Creek stayed close to Kishwaukee after the first day last year, +33 to +30 in the best-against-bogey format, before Kishwaukee pulled away on Day 2, topping Timber Creek +75 to +57.
"If we can get off to a good start, I think we can give them a run for their money," Miller said. "It's nice to scare somebody like that."
"They're always hard to beat," Hill said. "They've probably got it sewn up. We always felt victorious when we could get second."
Dunphy has been battling pneumonia but plans to be there to root on her teammates.
"That's nice," Miller said. "Even though she's not playing, she's behind us."
Four of Timber Creek's top five scorers at last year's tournament are not returning, including Boysen, who tied with Kristie Pultorak for a team-best +16. Patty Head takes over as the team's No. 1 golfer, and she's an LHT veteran.
"Our 1-2-3 are really strong, and the rest of us can hold our own," Miller said. "Patty Head didn't play last year, and she's our No. 1. It's too bad Mimi's not here. We would really be a strong team."
Hill looks forward to seeing all her old friends, as well as watching Ember Schuldt, who has won the tournament seven times in a row.
"I'm sure she has a strong chance of winning again," Hill said. "She's young, strong and practices every day. I'm a housewife who plays once or twice a week."
