Registration open for tennis tournament

The 23rd annual Emma Hubbs Tennis Classic will be held July 29-Aug. 2 at the Hubbs tennis courts in Dixon, and registration is due Wednesday.

MLBPA director rips Biogenesis leak

Major League Baseball Players Association director Michael Weiner lashed out Thursday at leaks of players names and information regarding the investigation of Andy Bosch’s defunct Biogenesis anti-aging clinic.

On Tuesday, an story cited “several sources” that said the Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez and Brewers’ Ryan Braun are among as many as 20 players who will be suspended after the All-Star break.

According to ESPNDetroit, Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta’s name appeared in the records of Biogenesis lab founder Tony Bosch, but it is unclear at this point whether Peralta is one of the players who could face a suspension.

In his statement, Weiner said: “The leaking of confidential information to members of the media interferes with the thoroughness and credibility of the Biogenesis investigation.”

Spahn’s son puts
Cy Young on market

Warren Spahn’s only child, Greg, will have more than 800 of his father’s items – including his 1957 Cy Young award – actioned off Monday in New York, part of the All-Star gala.

Greg Spahn said he doesn’t want to choose a sole heir among his five children.


Teague signs offer sheet with Bucks

Restricted free agent point guard Jeff Teague’s days in Atlanta could be numbered after he accepted a 4-year, $32 million offer sheet with the Milwaukee Bucks.

When the deal is officially signed and turned into the NBA office, the Hawks have 3 days to match.

Milwaukee also acquired Luke Ridnour from the Minnesota Timberwolves to bolster its backcourt in anticipation of losing Monta Ellis and Brandon Jennings.

Teague, who is the older brother of the Bulls’ Marquis Teague, had a career year in 2012-13, averaging 14.6 points and 7.2 assists. He was drafted by the Hawks in the 2009 draft.


Kovalchuk retires
with $77M left on deal

New Jersey Devils forward and former No. 1 pick Ilya Kovalchuk is retiring from the National Hockey League, the team said Thursday.

The 30-year-old Russian will be leaving behind a reported $77 million from the $100 million contract he signed in 2010.

Kovalchuk twice topped 50 goals in a season and on four other occasions potted more than 40. Over 11 NHL seasons with Atlanta and New Jersey, the three-time All-Star collected 816 points (417 goals, 399 assists) in 816 games.
