Melvin S. ‘Pat’ O’Brien

DIXON – Melvin S. “Pat” O’Brien, 86, of Dixon, died Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at KSB Hospital in Dixon. He worked for Northwestern Steel and Wire Co. in Sterling before retiring.

He was born Nov. 13, 1926, in Harmon, the son of Edward and Mary (Henry) O’Brien. Pat served in the Army. He married Velna Jean Denton on May 6, 1966, in Dixon. He was a member of American Legion Post 12 in Dixon. Throughout his life, he enjoyed playing baseball and golf.

Survivors include his wife, Jean of Dixon; two daughters, Becky Gearhart of Dixon and Jody Reynolds of Tennessee; two stepsons, Jeff Richards of Sterling and Terry (Ruth) Richards of Rock Falls; one stepdaughter, Pam (Dick) Drew of Franklin Grove; two sisters, Elizabeth O’Brien of Prescott, Ariz., and Loretta Fasanella of North Fort Myers, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Vicky Lee; five sisters; and three brothers.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday and the memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday at Preston-Schilling Funeral Home in Dixon, with the Rev. Bernie Sehr, pastor of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dixon, officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded.

A memorial has been established to Granny Rose Animal Shelter in Dixon.
