Eastland’s Olson named All-CCIW

Eastland High School graduate and North Central College sophomore Brittny Olson earned Academic All-CCIW honors for the spring season.

The former Cougar ran on the Cardinals’ winning 400-meter relay team at the CCIW Outdoor Championships and also placed fourth in the 100 and fifth in the 200.


Smith cards ace
at Lost Nation

Cody Smith carded a hole-in-one Tuesday at Lost Nation Golf Club in Dixon.

Smith used his 5-iron to sink the ace on the 189-yard No. 3. It was witnessed by Ron Sondgeroth, Doug Cleary and Gary Kluz.


Rock Falls wins junior league district title

The Rock Falls junior league team beat Rochelle 11-7 on Tuesday at Dillon Park to win the district championship, and will compete in sectionals July 19 in Mendota.


Docs cast Hernandez as trigger man

A man linked to the murder case involving former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez cast him as the triggerman in a police interview, according to documents filed Tuesday in Florida.

The records also show a vehicle wanted in a double killing in Boston a year before had been rented in the former Patriot Hernandez’s name.

Hernandez has been charged with murder in the June killing of Boston semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd.


Wrigley clock, walls could get ads

A Wrigley Field agreement approved by the city Landmarks Commission could pave the way for the Cubs to put advertising on the clock in the center field scoreboard and along the top of the outfield wall.

While much of the attention has centered on large video screens that could total 7,000 square feet in left and right fields, the commission last month approved a “master sign program” outlining the team’s plans for as much as 45,000 square feet of advertisements on the ballpark’s interior and exterior, roughly double what’s there now.

Cubs release Camp, part of bullpen purge

Reliever Shawn Camp cleared waivers on Tuesday and was given his unconditional release, ending phase one of the Cubs’ bullpen overhaul.

Camp was designated for assignment last week after posting a 7.04 earned run average and seven home runs allowed in 23 innings.


Bynum mulling Cavs’ 2-year offer

The Cavaliers offered a 2-year deal to 25-year-old free agent center Andrew Bynum, but he also met with the Hawks on Tuesday and planned to meet with the Mavericks today.

Bynum didn’t play a single second for Philadelphia last season because of knee injuries.
