Parade, fundraiser planned for soldier

DIXON – A benefit for Army Spc. Michael Shoemaker Jr. of Eldena, injured in Kandahar, Afghanistan, when ammunition exploded, starts at 10 a.m. Saturday with a parade that begins at Dixon High School, heads down Peoria Avenue, across Second Street, down Hennepin Avenue, and ends at the Ronald Reagan statue on the Riverfront. 

Then children’s activities such as face-painting, clowns and a bounce house will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Dixon VFW, 1560 Franklin Grove Road, as part of a Welcome Home Wounded Warrior event.

The benefit continues from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. with local band and musicians Rout 38, Robbie LeBlanc, Something Like That, and Kenny Kent; a 50/50 and other raffles; a Texas Hold ’em poker tourney, a silent auction and a bake sale.

Admission is $5 for ages 3 and older.
