STERLING – A benefit for a Morrison church secretary with cancer will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Latin American Social Club, 2708 W. Lincolnway.

Shawnelle “Shawn” Soenksen, 40, who works for Ebenezer Reformed Church, was diagnosed earlier this year with inflammatory breast cancer. She underwent surgery in Chicago and is receiving chemotherapy in Clinton, Iowa.

She is the wife of Kevin Soenksen, a Morrison police officer. She has four daughters, and Kevin has two sons.

Featured will be “Brave the Shave,” in which participants must raise at least $250 to avoid getting their head shaved. Those taking part include appellate court judge Vicki Wright; Morrison Police Chief Brian Melton; Allan Huizenga, owner of Clockwork Realty in Morrison; Thad Bramm; and Jennifer White and Susan Bentley, two of the benefit organizers.

There will be a DJ, hog roast meals for $5, a 50/50 raffle, a bake sale and live, silent, and dessert auctions. Items include themed baskets, a weekend at the Wisconsin Dells, and 18 holes of golf at Prairie Ridge Golf Course in Deer Valley.

Auction items can be dropped off until noon Saturday at Clockwork Realty, 113 E. Main St. Baked goods will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Clockwork, or Sunday at the club.

Monetary donations can be made to the Team Shawn fund at Advantage One Credit Union, 204 N. Jackson St. Make checks payable to Team Shawn.

Call Amy Bramm, 815-778-4539; White, 815-631-8118; or Bentley, 815-499-0823, or contact them through Facebook for more information, to donate items, or to sign up for “Brave the Shave”.
