Letters to the Editor

Don’t deprive others of their marriage rights

Again, I am deeply saddened by the fact that we have U.S. citizens who claim to support the Constitution, but would in the same breath seek to undermine it with irrational prejudice, discrimination, and deceit.

After reading David Smith’s letter on July 5, I was annoyed at his deceptive words and false conclusions. Throughout the letter, he claims that his condemning of same-sex marriage is for the children, and he carefully chooses not to use religion in his argument. This is a smokescreen, and a false one at that, to distract from the facts.

He argues that marriage is a government interest because it can produce children and is the best environment for raising children. It may be.

But if it is such a government interest, why not prevent those who are sterile from getting married, since they can’t have children? Why should they be able to get married if they can’t reproduce?

Choose your answer to that question carefully, as it would only serve to support my argument.

I can also think of many straight marriages that are not the best environment to raise kids in (and I know you can, too), but I guess he doesn’t have a problem with those.

I agree with him that a marriage with two stable parents is best for a child. But I beg you to watch the 3-minute YouTube video called “Zach Wahls Speaks About Family” and tell me that his parents’ sexual orientation mattered in raising him.

At last, Smith claims that the religious are having their rights to express their views quashed. It is not their views, but their systematic discrimination through law that is being quashed. They are essentially throwing a giant temper tantrum. I’m sorry you don’t get to deprive others of their rights anymore.
