STERLING – A Sterling man was in the Whiteside County Jail for what police said was the stabbing of a 17-year-old man during a fight Friday morning.

According to Sterling Police:

Around 2 a.m. Friday, officers responded to a call about a fight near 405 Locust St. in the downtown. According to police, Joseph J. Higley, 24, approached a group of people and, after “a few words were exchanged,” stabbed a 17-year-old Sterling man twice using a folding knife — once in the buttock and once in the hand.

One of the officers who responded found Higley, apparently intoxicated, about a block away in the parking lot of 210 W. 3rd Street. According to police, after some questioning Higley admitted to being part of the fight, was taken into custody and charged with aggravated battery and illegal possession of cannabis.

The victim was transported by ambulance to CGH Medical Center, police said.

Higley has a lengthy record that dates back to 2006, including charges of theft, battery, burglary and possession of cannabis.

A preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. July 11.

Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
