Apply online for dove hunting permits

Applications may be submitted through July 16 for Illinois free dove hunting permits at

After this second lottery’s deadline on July 16, hunters may apply for remaining permits on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning at 8 a.m. July 31.


Hawks goalie coach leaves for Montreal

Blackhawks goalie coach Stephane Waite left the organization to coach with the Montreal Canadiens.

The championship season was his 10th season with the Hawks.

defenseman Leddy

The Blackhawks agreed to terms with defenseman Nick Leddy on a 2-year contract Wednesday.

Leddy, 22, posted six goals, 12 assists and a plus-15 rating in 48
regular-season games.

No Hawks named
to first team

No Chicago Blackhawk was named to the 2013 NHL All-Star first team. Captain Jonathan Toews was named to the second team.

Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin was named to both the first and second teams. He was voted a first-team right wing – the position he played most of the season – and got enough votes as a left wing – where he played for his first seven NHL seasons – for a second-team berth there.

Flyers, Devils, Bruins jump free-agency gun

The Philadelphia Flyers gave their captain, Claude Giroux, an 8-year extension, while winger Danny Briere signed with
Montreal, and New Jersey signed Patrik Elias to a 3-year, $16.5 million contract, after he spent his first 15 seasons with the Devils.

The Boston Bruins and Dallas Stars also completed a blockbuster trade a day before the start of the NHL’s free agency period. In exchanging seven players, the rebuilding Stars acquired forwards Tyler Seguin and Rich Peverley in exchange for veteran forward Loui Eriksson.

Seguin had 16 goals and 16 assists in 48 regular-season games, but was limited to a goal and seven assists in 22 postseason contests.

Giroux’s extension is worth more than $64 million. He had 13 goals and 35 assists for 48 points in 48 games last season. Briere signed a 2-year, $8 million deal with the Canadiens.


Cubs designate Camp for assignment

The Cubs on Wednesday designated for assignment veteran reliever Shawn Camp.

Camp tied for the major league lead with 80 appearances last year, but had struggled through 2013 with a 7.04 ERA and seven home runs allowed in 23 innings.
