ROCKFORD (AP) – A fire forced 60 people to leave a Rockford hotel Wednesday with many rescued by ladder from second-floor windows.

Fire District chief Jim Rife tells the Rockford Register Star the fire caused smoke damage throughout the Howard Johnson Hotel. He says the fire is still under investigation.

Three people were hospitalized for smoke inhalation and a cat died.

The fire caused about $300,000 in damage.

The fire chief says four engines and 30 firefighters were able to put out the fire within 30 minutes.
