DIXON – New Game in Town owner Barry "Bear" Wolf noticed a trend.
Many of the customers at his DeKalb comic book and game store were making the 45-minute to an hour commute from the Sauk Valley.
"They were always asking, 'When are you going to open up in Dixon?," Wolf said.
Those customers got their wish.
Wolf opened The New Game In Town on June 7 at 118 N. Peoria Ave., at the former Dollar Green location across the street from Dixon High School.
Wolf, 45, also runs The New Game in Town at 811 W. Lincolnway Highway in DeKalb.
He sells comic books and board games, and also hosts game nights for card games and role-playing games, such as Magic the Gathering.
Most of the board games are strategy games or role-playing games.
"Anything you can't find at Walmart," Wolf said.
He takes an interactive approach to bringing in customers: New Game has seating in the back where customers are welcome to play board games, either from the shelves or their own brought from home.
Wednesday nights are designated board game nights.
Most of the games Wolf sells involve multiple players, and many have their own community of players.
"We have a lot of regulars," Wolf said. "Being across from the high school will be nice, too, because we'll be within walking distance from there."
New Game in Town has scheduled tutorials for Magic and other games, and Wolf said he is interested in recruiting new players to the game scene.
He's excited to move closer to the Sauk Valley.
"A lot of my customers were driving all over the place, because there isn't really anything like this in the area," Wolf said. "I'm hoping this will help bring in people from Rock Falls and Sterling and west of here."
