ROCK FALLS – City Hall is getting a new roof.
The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to pay Sterling Commercial Roofing Inc., the only company to submit a bid, $321,700 for repairs and renovations to the roofs and sidewalk canopies for the municipal complex buildings, which includes City Hall, the police department and fire department buildings.
The bid came in under the $331,000 the city had estimated for the project.
The money likely will come from state grants, but in the meantime, the city will use money from the general fund, which will be replaced when it gets the grant money, City Administrator Robbin Blackert said.
“We’re at the point where we just cannot wait because of the integrity of the building,” she said, adding that parts of the roof over City Hall are being held down with tires. The roof over the police department is the original roof installed in 1965.
Because the project eventually will be paid for with grant money, Blackert said there are “caveats” that generally only larger businesses can meet, which is why she thinks the city received only one bid.
Also Tuesday, the council approved two appointments to the Industrial Development Commission.
Jeff Moore and 2nd Ward Councilman Brian Snow will serve the terms, which began April 30. Moore’s term will end April 30, 2018, but Snow, who is taking over for 1st Ward Councilman Daehle Reitzel, will have his term end April 30, 2016.
For efficiency’s sake, the council also consolidated several committees Tuesday night, combining the Public Works and Property Committees into a single committee and the Ordinance Committee and Personnel and Safety Committee into a single committee.
The Rock Falls City Council next meets at 6:30 p.m. July 16 at City Hall, 603 W. 10th St.
