The show will go on as planned

Carnival not likely to be affected by rising Rock River

DIXON – Rising Rock River waters do not have the Petunia Festival board concerned.

The Rock River has flooded the bottom sidewalks at Heritage Crossing and approached the parking area near Dixon High School where the carnival is located, but the carnival is not expected to be affected, said Theresa Sholders, the festival’s vice president of marketing.

If flooding does approach the carnival, though, there is a contingency plan to move some rides, Sholders said.

“We are asking visitors to take caution on the sidewalks,” she said. “There still is flooding on some of the sidewalks, and some sidewalks will be wet. We just want everyone to use caution.”

The carnival opens in Page Park Thursday and ends Sunday. Admission is free this year.

The Taste Trail and entertainment will move across the river to the downtown, along River Road and adjacent to Heritage Crossing.

The National Weather Service has issued a river flood advisory until 7 a.m. Friday. The river has reached 14.9 feet; flood stage is 16 feet. A slow drop is expected, the advisory said.

To ride the rides

The North American Midway Entertainment Carnival will be open in Page Park from 1 to 11 p.m. Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, and from 4 to 11 p.m. Friday in front of Dixon High School.

Wristbands are $20 on Friday, $23 the rest of the time. Admission to carnival grounds is free.
