Gabriel Shaw is the owner of, and driver for, American Taxi Extension, a new taxi company operating in Rock Falls and Sterling. He provides service to airports in Chicago and the Quad Cities, in addition to shuttling riders around the Sauk Valley.

A new taxi company has started operating in Rock Falls and Sterling.

American Taxi Extension, its owner and driver Gabriel Shaw said, will have metered trips within both cities, and flat rates to Dixon, Quad City International Airport, O’Hare International Airport and Midway Airport.

“I just want to make things a little cheaper, locally,” said Shaw, who moved to the area 11 years ago.

The rates will operate the same as in Chicago, he said, with a $2 charge for the first passenger and then $1 for every other passenger. That’s in addition to $2 per mile within Sterling and Rock Falls, and $2.40 per mile for the outlying cities, such as Morrison and Milledgeville.

The flat rate to Dixon will be $20, and the flat rate to O’Hare will be $150 with 24 hours notice and $175 with 3 hours notice. All trips to Midway will be $175, and trips to the Quad City Airport will be $60 with 24 hours notice and $65 with 3 hours notice.

Shaw has just one vehicle, a red, white and blue 2013 Grand Caravan. Additional vehicles and drivers will be added as demand increases.

Hours of operation, which are subject to change, are from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. Monday and Tuesday; from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday; by appointment only on Thursday; from 4 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday; and 24 hours on Saturday and Sunday.
