Ex-commissioner admits corruption

CHICAGO (AP) – A former Cook County commissioner has pleaded guilty in a federal corruption case.

Joseph Moreno pleaded guilty on Monday to one count of conspiracy to commit extortion. The Chicago Sun-Times reports (http://bit.ly/11UBZN9) that the plea is part of a deal. Moreno admitted to taking a $5,000 cash bribe from a company that wanted to build a waste transfer station in Cicero. He also admitted influencing a county hospital contract so his $100,000 home mortgage would be erased.

Moreno was a Cook County commissioner from 1994 to 2010. His attorney, Richard Kling, says Moreno “is accepting responsibility for his own behavior and his own behavior alone.”
