Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham are of the opinion that Islamic terrorists currently held in military custody at Guantanamo Bay should be transferred to the Thomson prison in Carroll County (“McCain: Move detainees to Thomson,” June 11).
As one of thousands who braved the cold at a public meeting about this issue in December 2009 in Sterling, I want to reiterate something I said then for the benefit of Sens. McCain and Graham.
The idea of moving terrorists captured on the battlefield to Illinois is a dangerous proposition, if for no other reason than the Supreme Court’s Eisentrager ruling.
In the Eisentrager case, Nazi soldiers captured during World War II challenged their military detention. At that time, the Supreme Court held that since the enemy soldiers had never been held on U.S. soil, they were not entitled to the protections and rights afforded by the Constitution.
Should Sens. McCain and Graham, along with President Obama, get their way and move the terrorists to Thomson, they will be ensuring that they get all of the rights and protections of our Constitution. For people who have sworn to destroy us and our way of life, that is something we cannot allow to happen.
Please feel free to contact Sens. McCain and Graham’s offices and inform them about the Eisentrager ruling and its implications for the terrorists who they want to move to our backyard.
