McKinzie to promote book in Sterling

Pat McKinzie-Lechault, a standout athlete at
Sterling High School in the mid-1970s, will speak at 6 p.m. today at the library about her book “Home Sweet Hardwood: A Title IX Trailblazer Breaks Barriers Through Basketball.”

Wild first draft day for Blackhawks

After trading Dave
Bolland to Toronto and Michael Frolik to Winnipeg, the Chicago Blackhawks went from having five draft picks to eight.

They spent their first pick, the 30th overall, on West Dundee native and Fremd High School graduate Ryan Hartman.

Hartman will return to play next season for Plymouth, the Ontario Hockey League team for which he had 23 goals, 37 assists and 120 penalty minutes last season.

The Hawks added two other Chicago-area players.
In the third round (74th overall), they took Chicago-born center John Hayden from the U.S. National Team Development
Program. Winfield native Anthony Louis, a center from the same program, was the Hawks’ sixth-round pick (181st overall).

Saad named to
All-Rookie team

Chicago Blackhawks forward Brandon Saad was named Saturday to the 2012-13 NHL All-Rookie Team.

Saad, 20, led all rookies with a +17 rating and was fifth among rookies in each of the three major scoring
categories: goals (10), assists (17) and points (27).

Bulls won’t renew assistant’s contract

The Bulls will not renew the contract of lead assistant coach Ron Adams, whose deal expired Sunday.

Adams, in his second stint with the Bulls, returned in 2010 after a successful run as Scott Brooks’ lead assistant in Oklahoma City. Adams left the Thunder in part to join longtime friend Tom Thibodeau’s first staff, and also to live again with his family.

Cubs’ Sweeney out with fractured rib

Cubs outfielder Ryan Sweeney will be sidelined at least 6 weeks after
suffering a fractured rib.

Since his call-up from Iowa on May 6, Sweeney
hit .295 with a .527
slugging percentage and played well defensively.

Brazil usurps Spain in Confed Cup final

Fred scored two goals and Neymar added another as host Brazil defeated world champion Spain 3-0 to win the Confederations Cup on Sunday.

CYCLING

Bakelants takes stage, yellow jersey

Jan Bakelants pulled away close to the finish
line to win Sunday’s second stage of the Tour de France and take the race leader’s yellow jersey.

The Belgian made his move with a few hundred meters remaining, and withstood a late charge from Slovakian sprinter Peter Sagan.
