STERLING – The last grandchild of longtime Daily Gazette publisher D.W. Grandon has died.

Elizabeth “Betty” Bull Bauer died June 23 at her home in Chicago after a long battle with cancer. She was 83.

Bauer graduated from Sterling High School in 1947 and attended her 65th class reunion last year.

She was an accomplished singer. She studied German lieder singing at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Austria. She was a popular soloist at churches in Chicago, New York City and New Jersey. She also taught private voice lessons and for the Academy of Music in Oak Park.

Bauer also was a soprano soloist with the Chicago Chamber Choir and various choral groups in New Jersey. She partnered with Sterling High School classmate, Richard Eickenberry, a baritone, then of New York City, during their 40th class reunion for a series of duet performances in Sterling. The pair gave a duet recital at Weill Recital Hall (inside Carnegie Hall) in 1992.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, attorney Peter A. Bauer. She is survived by Georgia J. Sanford of Sterling, a great-granddaughter of D.W. and Elizabeth Grandon, among others.

Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Sterling.

Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of the United States or PAWS Chicago.
