District needs superintendent

Andersen resigns appointment; no word on whether Lutyens will be hired

ROCK FALLS – It seemed it would be a smooth transition.

The Nelson and East Coloma school districts would merge, and one of the superintendents from one of those districts would serve as superintendent of the new district.

That’s the way the school board of the new district wanted it: The board on May 23 appointed East Coloma Superintendent Kevin Andersen to the post in the new district and named Nelson Superintendent Gregory Lutyens as the backup.

But that’s not quite the way things are going: Monday, the board will consider Andersen’s resignation, along with a contract for the new superintendent, according to the agenda for the meeting.

Will Lutyens serve as the superintendent of the new district? The answer is not clear.

The board on May 23 named Lutyens as the interim “for the remainder of [the] 2013-14 [school year],” according to the minutes from that meeting.

But Lutyens, who retired in 2009, might only be able to serve as superintendent part time because he receives a pension with the Teachers Retirement System.

Lutyens worked only 100 days a year – with no benefits, no sick leave and no vacation – and pulled in a $60,000 annual salary, in addition to $84,000 a year from his pension during his time with Nelson School.

The agenda for the meeting Monday makes no mention of a search for a new superintendent – only a contract for a new superintendent, which seems to imply the board already has made its choice.

So will a similar arrangement with Lutyens working part time continue in the new district? Again, the answer is not clear.

Phone calls to school board President Mark Nardini, as well as an email to Lutyens, went unreturned this week. Emails exchanged with Andersen were vague and advised Sauk Valley Media to contact Nardini.
