Schuldt falls in state amateur semis

Sterling native and current University of Illinois golfer Ember Schuldt went 1-1 Thursday at the Illinois State Women’s Amateur Championship at Cantigny Golf Club in Wheaton.

Schuldt defeated defending women’s state amateur champion Elizabeth
Szokol of Winnetka 3 and 2 in the championship flight quarterfinals, then lost to University of Iowa golfer and Bloomington native Lauren English in the semifinals, 3 and 1.

English will face 16-year-old Naperville resident Bing Singhsumalee in today’s championship match. Singhsumalee defeated 2010 state women’s am winner Nora Lucas of Chicago 3 and 1 in the other semifinal.


Billings is preseason All-American

Wartburg College senior Ryan Billings, a 2010 Sterling graduate, has been named to the second team of the Beyond Sports Network’s preseason All-American team.

Billings led the Knights with 62.5 total tackles and 18.5 tackles for loss from his linebacker position last year. He earned first-team All-Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and third-team all-region honors last fall.

Hossa could need back surgery

Marian Hossa said Thursday he might need surgery to repair a disk in his back after suffering an injury late in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Bruins.

Hossa played Games 4-6 with his right foot numb and his mobility limited. The 34-year-old has undergone an MRI and is discussing options with team doctors and training staff.


Celtics, Nets
blockbuster in works

Negotiations for a blockbuster deal that would send Celtics stars Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett to the Nets has reached the ownership level of both teams, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The package going from Brooklyn to Boston would include Gerald Wallace, Tornike Shengelia and first-round draft picks in 2014, 2016 and 2018.


Cubs get partial win in Wrigley hearing

The Cubs earned a partial early victory for their ambitious Wrigley Field construction plan Thursday, getting a preliminary signoff to move back the outfield walls and make other changes to the aging ballpark.

But consideration of the most controversial aspect of the $300 million stadium renovation – two new giant signs in the outfield bleachers – was put off until next month as the team, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Ald. Tom Tunney keep negotiating over the size.
