Chicago considering updated assault weapons ban

Published: Wednesday, June 26, 2013 3:30 p.m. CDT

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is proposing changes in the city's assault weapons ban to cover weapons that might have not been included under the current ban.

Emanuel introduced the new ban at the City Council meeting on Wednesday. The mayor's office says the ordinance reflects advances in gun technology and includes specific weapons that have capabilities that would render them illegal.

State lawmakers have approved a guns bill that give municipalities ten days from the time Gov. Pat Quinn signs the legislation to pass or update assault weapons legislation. Emanuel says that's why the measure is necessary.

The bill is on Quinn's desk but the governor's office has only said he is reviewing it.
