Absher commits to Augustana College

Oregon graduate Devyn Absher has committed to play basketball at Augustana College in Rock Island.

Absher averaged 7 points and 4.1 rebounds for the Hawks. She was an SVM all-area honorable mention selection.


Ebersole 3-on-3tourney date set

The Don Ebersole 3-on-3 Memorial basketball tournament will be held on July 14 at Westwood Sports Complex. Games begin at 9 a.m.

Teams can consist of as many as five players. The cost for each player is $5. Players can register through the Sterling Park District up to July 9. Late entry on the day of the event might be allowed. Proceeds will go to the Sterling Park District Westwood Youth Basketball Program.


Newman junior tackle registration

Players can register for Newman Junior Tackle until July 12. The program is open to all private school players in Dixon, Rock Falls and Sterling in grades four through eight. Public school players in Dixon and Sterling will also be accepted.

Rockton hosting Summer Beeze 5K

The 2013 Rockton Summer Breeze 5K will be August 17 at 8 a.m. The cost per runner is $20. There is also an $80 group of five rate.

Kelly says cancer is gone

Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly said he is cancer-free 2 weeks after having surgery to remove part of his jawbone where the squamous cell carcinoma was found.

He also said he will not need radiation or chemotherapy.

Police search creek in investigation

Police searched a body of water and an industrial park near the home of New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez on Monday.

The body of Odin Lloyd, a 27-year old semi-pro football player for the Boston Bandits and an associate of Hernandez’s, was found about a mile from Hernandez’s home.
