Barth, May honoree, gets his kicks in music

Barth’s advice to freshmen: ‘Don’t be afraid of the upper classmen’

Senior Michael Barth, 18, is Dixon High School’s May Student of the Month. His parents are Deb and Jerry Barth, and he has an older sister, Alex.

Favorite class: Honors Choir, because it was a relaxing and fun time I could share with my friends, doing something I loved. I learned a lot and it became a place that I could call home.

Top teacher: Mr. Jeffrey Clark, because I truly respect what he does and the way he handles his classroom. He’s not only a great teacher, he’s a great person.

Extracurriculars: I was the president of the choral department and was in jazz choir, madrigals and jazz band. I participated in the Illinois Musical Educators Association district and state jazz ensembles. Also, I attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Conference, I was a member of Key Club and Leo Club, and I played tennis.

After graduation: I will attend Sauk Valley Community College in the fall.

Paycheck: I work at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Dixon, as a choral member. I love the people there, and singing in the Sunday evening Latin chant service.

Favorite musical group: Cimorelli, six home-schooled sisters from California who sing a cappella covers and originals.

Favorite actor: Robert Downey Jr., because he has such a dry, witty sense of humor.

Favorite TV show: “Avatar, the Last Airbender.” This show was near and dear to me as a child, and coming back to it as an adult I have found much more depth in the morality of the plot.

Hobbies: I enjoy being outdoors, watching storms pass through, spending time with my friends, and music.

Favorite outdoor activities: Watching the rain or playing tennis.

Favorite food: Lasagna and chicken strips.

What kind of music makes your skin crawl? I can’t say I’m the world’s largest fan of heavy metal or screamo.

Secret twin: Adam Brody, the detective in “Scream 4.” I’ve never seen the movie, so I’ll have to take my friends’ word for it.

Trading spaces: France. I’ve always admired the culture and beauty of the country.

What’s a tip you would give freshmen for making high school life easier? I know that one thing I’ve said recently is this; don’t be afraid of the upperclassmen. As a freshman, I was terrified of seniors. Sitting here now as one of those seniors, it seems ridiculous that I was so afraid. Remember this; life won’t hit you with more than you can handle. High school seems like a terrifying obstacle that you have to tackle all at once, but it comes one day at a time. So tackle it, but take it one day at a time, and relax. These 4 years are going to pass you just as the previous years have and there’s nothing that you won’t be able to handle.

Shout out to: Kurt Gale, and my grandparents Don and Darlene Montague.
