NIU approves 2 percent tuition increase

DEKALB (AP) — Trustees at Northern Illinois University voted to approve a 2 percent tuition increase for new, in-state undergraduate students and current graduate students.

The hike will affect about 28 percent of the 22,000 students enrolled at the DeKalb university.

The increase means an in-state student would pay about $302 a credit hour, while an out-of-state student would pay twice that. Graduate students would pay about $342 a credit hour, while law students will pay $651.

The change means an incoming freshman from Illinois who's taking a full load of classes would pay about $9,100 a year, excluding fees, room and board.

The school's expecting about $454 million in revenue for the upcoming school year. About a fifth of that will come from the state.
