Vote on teachers contract Monday

OREGON – The Oregon School Board Monday postponed its vote on a new 5-year contract with teachers.

The board will wait to vote until after Oregon Education Association members have voted, Superintendent Tom Mahoney said.

The teachers met June 13, but too few were there to ratify the pact; the OEA expects to approve it this week, Mahoney said.

He declined to specify the terms of the new agreement. “Both sides have agreed that we won’t discuss it until after it’s been approved,” he said.

A special school board will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday to approve the contract, which covers the 2013-14 through 2017-18 school years.

The current contract, which expires June 30, was for 3 years.

The longer agreement has advantages for both sides and will aid financial planning, Mahoney said.

“The idea was that it provides stability for both the district and the staff.”
