Doubles tourney is Saturday in Rock Falls

The Coloma Township Park District is putting on its annual doubles tennis tournament Saturday at Centennial Park in Rock Falls.

The event is for those 16 and older, and entrants are guaranteed two matches. You can register or get more information by calling the district office at 815-625-0272.


Sterling grad part of standout Augie duo

Colin Arnold, a 2010 Sterling High School graduate, tandemed with Jack Cullen to go 10-3 as Augustana College’s No. 2 doubles tandem this past season.

That ran their career record to 42-15 as a team, ranking third in the program’s history in wins and fifth in winning percentage at .737.


Wings, Datsyuk agree to 3-year deal

Pavel Datsyuk and the Detroit Red Wings agreed to a 3-year, $22.5 million contract.

Datsyuk led Detroit with 15 goals and 49 points in the 48-game, lockout-shortened season and helped the Red Wings win the Stanley Cup in 2002 as a rookie and again in 2008.


deal turns sour

The Clippers and Boston Celtics called off the deal that centered around coach Doc Rivers and Kevin Garnett coming to Los Angeles.

The final sticking point was Boston president of basketball operations Danny Ainge insisting that Clippers vice president of basketball operations Gary Sacks give the Celtics two No. 1 draft picks along with DeAndre Jordan.


Yankees’ Youkilis to miss 10 to 12 weeks

New York Yankees infielder Kevin Youkilis is scheduled for back surgery to repair a herniated disk Thursday that will keep him off the field for 10 to 12 weeks.

Youkilis, 34, is hitting .219 with two home runs and eight RBIs in 34 games this season. He batted .146 in 11 games after he recently returned from his month-long stint on the DL.

Twins affiliate involved in fatal crash

A bus carrying a Minnesota Twins minor-league affiliate was involved in a wrong-way interstate crash in Florida that killed the driver of the other car.

No one on the Elizabethton Twins bus was injured in the crash that occurred about 4:25 a.m. Tuesday near Jacksonville.


Daytona to get
$400M makeover

The Daytona International Speedway will eliminate 45,000 seats in the next 3 years to convert its frontstretch into a sprawling development of 11 social “neighborhoods” after next month’s Coke Zero 400.

Construction is expected to cost about $400 million. The redevelopment will include wider seats, five expanded entrances and additional video screens, escalators, elevators, restrooms and concession stands.
