All-Star Classic transforms June into January

It will seem like a January evening of basketball tonight at the SVM All-Star Classic. Cheerleaders and a pep band have been added to two competitive games and the traditional shooting contests. Come out and enjoy the fun.

Bing Crosby, the 20th-century singer and actor, used to croon about the month of June.

“It’s June in January, because I’m in love,” Crosby sang.

But on this day, for fans who love high school basketball, the opposite is true.

For one special evening, it’s January in June.

The Sauk Valley Media Sports Department, in cooperation with KSB Hospital and Moore Tires, sponsors the SVM All-Star Classic at the Sauk Valley Community College gymnasium.

Top graduating seniors who starred on area basketball courts this past winter were invited to reprise their roles. We thank the 20 girls players and 25 boys players who agreed to take part.

Schools represented on the squads are Rock Falls, Dixon, Sterling, Newman, Morrison, Amboy, Eastland, Erie, Polo, Prophetstown, Oregon, AFC, Faith Christian, Rochelle, West Carroll, and Fulton.

The girls all-star game begins at 5 p.m. today, followed by the boys game at 7 p.m.

We expect both games to be exciting and competitive. The traditional 3-point contests for boys and girls, and the dunk contest for the boys, are also crowd pleasers.

What will make this annual event even more special are the “extras” organized by the SVM Sports Department.

An All-Star squad of cheerleaders, composed of 12 recently graduated high school seniors, will perform during the games – a first for the SVM All-Star Classic.

In addition, for the first time, an All-Star pep band of 13 recently graduated seniors has been assembled to perform.

Plus, fans who love their popcorn will be happy to know that Sauk Valley College plans to have a concession stand.

So, there you have it: two entertaining basketball games, cheerleaders, a pep band, and popcorn to boot.

For area basketball fans, no wonder it will seem like January in June – at least inside the SVCC gymnasium.
