STERLING – Phillip John Kelly, 82, of Sterling, died Sunday, June 16, 2013, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.

John was born Jan. 19, 1931, in Sterling, the son of Laurence Leo Kelly and Helen Marie (Foulds) Kelly. He graduated from Community High School in 1948 and Sauk Valley Community College in 1981. John served in the Navy from 1948 to 1952.

John was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Elks. He was an avid reader and great storyteller. He enjoyed cards, horses, and crossword puzzles. He was known for his love of family and friends. John donated his body to science.

John is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his sister, Betty (Frank) McCue; his four children, Anne (John) Steiner, and Larry, Jim, and Paula Kelly; his stepson, Mike French; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Ned and Bill Kelly; his first wife, Paula Gordon Kelly; and one daughter, Mary, in infancy.

A celebration of his life will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Sterling American Legion, followed by a luncheon.

A memorial will be established to the Veterans Administration.
