AMBOY – Gordon H. Parker, 88, of Amboy, died Saturday, June 15, 2013 at home, peacefully in his sleep, with his faithful companion, Mitzi, at his side.
He was born Jan. 2, 1925, in Sublette, the son of Herbert and Joy (Stitzel) Parker. He married Shirley Longman on March 28, 1948 in Amboy. She preceded him in death on May 18, 1989.
Gordon was a welder for Northwestern Steel & Wire in Sterling for many years until his retirement in 1989. He also farmed in the Amboy and Lee Center Township areas.
Gordon served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Lee Center Congregational United Church of Christ, the Lee Center Masonic Lodge, and the Amboy American Legion. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he enjoyed hiking. He also was a world traveler.
Survivors include one son, Jeffrey (Fe) Parker of Amboy; two daughters, Pamela Dahle of Bensenville; and Sylvia (Mike) Galloway of Sedona, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Heidi Dahle, Jeremiah (Megan) Parker, Jennifer Parker, Stephanie Parker, and Silas Parker; five great- grandchildren, Brenden, Gloria, Ezra, Hudsyn, and Parker; and longtime special friend Velma Quest of Sublette.
He also was preceded in death by one brother, George Parker, and one sister, Caroline Berg.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, followed by the funeral at 11:30 a.m. at Lee Center Congregational United Church of Christ. The Rev. Jack Briggs, pastor, will officiate. Cremation rites will follow with burial of cremains at a later date in Woodside Cemetery in Lee Center.
Memorials have been established to the National Parkinson Foundation and Passages Hospice.
