Thank you for successful blood drive

Published: Saturday, June 22, 2013 1:15 a.m. CDT

On behalf of the Dixon Fire Department, I would like to thank the members of the community who were able to donate at our annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive.

Dixon firefighters have had a blood drive every year for quite some time, but this year we changed the name and included Dixon Police and Dixon Rural Fire departments. The change was made to add some friendly competition and, hopefully, increase the number of donors.

Because of the generosity of the donors, this year was very successful.

The American Red Cross had a goal of 37 donors, and we greatly exceeded that goal by having 63 donors.

We would also like to apologize to any donors who were turned away or unable to donate because of the overwhelming number of participants. It is estimated that we would have had 80 to 100 total pints with those donors included.

We are working with the American Red Cross to make sure that those complications will not occur again.

The final tally of pints was 63, with 55 of those pints being donated to the Dixon Fire departments and the other eight pints being donated to the Dixon Police Department. A trophy was donated by Dixon Rural Fire and will be displayed at the Public Safety Building at 210 S. Hennepin Ave. on the fire department side of the glass display case.

One pint of blood can potentially save three lives, so your contributions at the blood drive potentially will save 189 individuals.

Thank you again, and please be sure to donate with us again next year and whenever possible.

Note to readers – Scott Romine, a firefighter/paramedic, was an organizer of the blood drive.
