Seeks help to find families of 1944 draftees

Published: Tuesday, June 18, 2013 1:15 a.m. CST

We are looking for the families or friends of the men drafted around Aug. 29, 1944, from Whiteside County or thereabouts.

My brother, William Rock, was drafted on the same date, and he didn’t know any of the men. Now, he would like to know families or friends of the men as a memorial to them.

Of 36 men who were drafted, six were inducted into the Navy; one of them was William.

The others were inducted into the infantry. Of them, 24 were killed in the Battle of the Bulge.

Would you please help him?

If you can help in any way, my email is crock7@cfl.rr.com, and my mailing address is 5173 Deer Creek Drive, Orlando, FL 32821-7643.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
