Hindus set to build temple in Bloomington

BLOOMINGTON (AP) — Hindus in Bloomington have dreamed of building their own temple for more than 30 years and may soon see it happen.

A building permit has been issued for the Hindu Temple of Bloomington-Normal. The permit calls for a $700,000 structure.

Ramesh Chaudhari is president of the temple organization. He told The Pantagraph newspaper (http://bit.ly/16lVbUf ) that the idea dates to about 35 years ago when the local population of people of Indian origin was about 100 families. Now he says that community has grown to about 5,000 people.

Chaudhari says many of those people drive to Peoria or Chicago to worship or have services in their homes.

The new temple's main hall will hold about 400 people.

Money to build the temple was raised in a grassroots campaign.
