Courthouse in Galesburg tests positive for radon

GALESBURG (AP) — Knox County Sheriff David Clague says the courthouse in Galesburg has tested positive for radon.

The Register-Mail reports (http://bit.ly/18yNuyi ) that radon-positive areas in the courthouse include those housing the information technologies department and a waiting area for potential jurors. The test results mean the county has to move employees and find a new place to house jurors.

Clague is in charge of renovations and safety work at the courthouse in the western Illinois county.

Radon is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that comes from the radioactive decay of naturally occurring uranium in the soil. Experts say it is the second-leading cause of lung cancer. They estimate about 1,200 radon-related lung cancer deaths happen every year in Illinois.
