Sheriff seeks information about quarry burglary

STERLING – The Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information about a burglary at the Emerson quarry sometime Sunday night.

Based on video surveillance footage, a large white man with longer, bushy hair and a white shirt entered the quarry sometime between 6 and 8 p.m.

The man drove the skid loader around the property, Deputy Greg Williams said. He picked up another large white man wearing a dark-colored shirt who had been hiding in the weeds at the entrance to the lower pit, and then together, those two men picked up a smaller white man, Williams said.

The men took four Caterpillar D4 batteries, which are similar to car batteries, Williams said. They drove the skid loader about 1.5 to 2 miles to a parked vehicle, into which they loaded the stolen batteries, then drove the skid loader back to the quarry, he said.

A dark-colored pickup was reported in the area at the time of the incident, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Emerson limestone quarry, 2306 Emerson Road, just west of Sterling, is operated by Alliance Materials.

Anyone with information should call the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office, 815-772-4044, or Crime Stoppers, 815-625-7867.
