Thanks volunteers in advance

Published: Saturday, June 15, 2013 1:15 a.m. CDT

Every year, we give a great big “thanks” to all the people who participate in our July 4 reading of the Declaration of Independence. Usually, this is done after the event has been completed.

This year a number of people already have graciously stepped up to the challenge of taking part in this very patriotic presentation – and for that, I’m certainly most appreciative.

Tom Wadsworth again will be the reader – it’s becoming very apparent had he been alive in 1776 he would’ve personally contributed to the writing of the document itself. Gloria Nussbaum and Lou Ann McMillion have arranged for a community choir to provide patriotic music throughout the program. Gene Messer, Roger Fisher, Del Schafer, Don Asp, Lynn Asp, Sally Baumgardner, Joe Loomis, and Tim Voelker are supplying volunteer efforts to make this another successful program.

Pastor Jack Briggs of the Franklin Grove Presbyterian Church will be on hand. He will give the opening and closing prayers denoting God’s blessings to the people of this great country to have been given such a wonderful document as the Declaration of Independence.

We will be pleased this year to have several different enthusiastic presentations by people from a variety of backgrounds giving their views to “what freedom means to me.” Those presenters include Jason Bauer, head oncology nurse at SwedishAmerican Hospital in Rockford; Katie Pratt, “Face of Farming and Ranching for U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance;” Colleen Lawrence, Presbyterian pastor from Paxton;  Larry Lough, SVM editor; and Ed Floto, Franklin Grove businessman.

Thanks to each and everyone of you for relating that this nation was set free to become a “beacon of hope” for all peoples of the world 237 years ago. We must continue to remember our Founding Fathers, and each of you are helping to provide a tribute to them for their efforts from so long ago.
