Spellers move ahead in contest

OREGON – A group of spellers 50 years or older participated in the May 18 Illinois State Senior Spelling Bee competition at Rock River Center.

The spelling bee is being coordinated by the Association of Illinois Senior Centers, the state Department on Aging, and local senior organizations throughout the state.

Spellers who placed were Kay King, champion; Anna Hatzipanagiotis, runner-up; and David Nelson, alternate. They advance to the regional semi-finals.

The state finals will be Aug. 12, Senior Day, in the Illinois Building at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield.
