Jets’ Smith says agent switch his idea

New York Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith has no concerns about questions surrounding the process in which he picked an agent, saying “Jay-Z didn’t recruit me.”

Smith fired his former agency, Select Sports, shortly after the NFL draft last month and announced last week that he signed with the hip-hop star’s Roc Nation Sports. Smith also said his contract agent would be Kimberly Miale.

NFL.com first reported that the NFL Players Association is “aggressively pursuing” Jay-Z’s role in getting Smith to sign with his agency. Agents not certified by the NFLPA can’t recruit players to sign with certified agents, as Miale is.

Smith says he chose Roc Nation solely because it was something he and his family “felt comfortable with.”

Upsets, rain hit French Open

Bethanie Mattek-Sands rallied past 2011 champion Li Na 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 Thursday in the second round at the French Open, joining four other U.S. women in the third round.

Joining Mattek-Sands on Thursday were fellow Americans No. 54-ranked Jamie Hampton (7-5, 6-2 win over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova) and Sloane Stephens (6-1, 6-3 win over Vania King). Also, No. 3 Victoria Azarenka defeated Annika Beck 6-4, 6-3, and American Melanie Oudin lost to Zheng Jie 6-3, 6-1.

In men’s play, six-time major champ Novak Djokovic beat the rain and Guido Pella 6-2, 6-0, 6-2.

Ten singles matches were postponed, including seven-time champion Rafael Nadal against Martin Klizan, and the all-American encounter between John Isner and Ryan Harrison.

Defending champion Maria Sharapova led 19-year-old Eugenie Bouchard 6-2, 4-2 when their match was interrupted by rain shortly before dark and suspended until Friday.

OSU president takes jab at Notre Dame

Ohio State University president Gordon Gee said Notre Dame was never invited to join the Big Ten conference because the university’s priests are not good partners, joking that “those damn Catholics” can’t be trusted, according to a recording of a meeting he attended last December.

Gee also took shots at the academic integrity of the University of Louisville and schools in the SEC.

The university called the statements inappropriate and said Gee is undergoing a “remediation plan” because of the remarks.
