Information session held in Morrison

MORRISON – Details about the city of Morrison’s pending application regarding the commercial area and the National Register of Historic Places were discussed May 21.

The Morrison Historic Preservation Commission held the public information session at Odell Public Library.

Darius Bryjka, a nationally-recognized expert on historic preservation and Morrison’s project consultant, was the speaker.

His work is being funded by a grant from the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.

The name selected for the proposed listing is the “Morrison Main Street Historic District.” Bryjka moved through general notions of architectural historic preservation and its benefits, He also gave a description of the National Register of Historic Places and the specifics of the application process.

He said being included in a listed national historic district carries no rules, regulations, or restrictions. Among the benefits of listing were being able to better market the downtown retail and service establishments and to get tax credits for qualifying building improvements.

Part of the application process will include volunteers researching the history of each building within the proposed boundary.

The goal is to complete the project by the fall and to submit the application.
