Senior J.D. Sheppard, 18, is one of Sterling High School’s May Students of the Month. He is the son of Melissa Sheppard of Sterling; his half-sisters are Jamie Sheppard, 25, who lives in Australia, and Jessica Sheppard, 23, who lives in Clinton, Iowa.

Favorite class: AP calculus, because it was a huge challenge. I actually had to pay attewntion more and study more and put forth 100 percent in the class to do well.

Top teacher: Steve Johnson, chemistry. He’s just a really fun guy. He gets along with all of his students, and he does things that relate to all of us. He makes class fun with his review games and labs.

Extracurriculars: Golf and basketball, National Honor Society, and service learning.

After graduation: I’m going to the University of Iowa to study mechanical engineering.

Best friend: Cassidy Gillihan, also a senior at Sterling High School. We have been friends since we were young. Sometimes it’s easier to talk to a girl rather than a guy, because they’re more smart about some things.

Favorite singer: Luke Bryan.

Favorite actor: Leonardo DiCaprio.

Favorite movie: “Like Mike.”

Favorite TV show: “Trailer Park Boys.”

Hobbies: Golfing, fishing and hanging out with friends.

Favorite outdoor activity: Fishing. I go to a couple ponds and the river, or for a getaway, up to Wisconsin.

Favorite food: Macaroni and cheese in any form. Mac ‘n’ cheese pizza, Easy Mac, homemade. It doesn’t matter.

Favorite place to shop: If anywhere, Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Favorite website: Facebook.

Biggest fear: Spiders and bugs that have a lot of legs.

Pet peeve: Hypocrites.

Haunts: Emerald Hill Golf Course or my girlfriend’s house.

I’m in the dictionary next to: Tall. I’m 6-foot-4.

Dream job: I’d like to be a professional basketball coach. I’d rather coach people than get coached sometimes.

Trading places: Adam Richman, host of “Man v. Food” on the Travel Channel. He gets to go to all those cool food places. I can’t watch without eating.

Trading spaces: Australia. It’s really nice, plus I could see and stay with my sister. I’d have to go in the winter, though, because it’s not so nice right now; their weather is opposite of ours.

Read this: “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury. It kind of makes you realize what a different world could be like and shows you what it would be like if we gave up on our moral values and education – how out of hand our world could get.

What would you do if you had $100,000? I’d buy a cabin on a lake, a nice boat and fishing stuff and just fish all day.

What do you wish your high school had? Air conditioning.

What’s a tip you would give freshmen for making high school life easier? Try all 4 years. Don’t just fly by and turn it on at the last minute. Put forth the effort from the start.

Shout out to: My mom. Hi, Mom!
