Substitute teacher admits making threatening call

WAUKEGAN (AP) — A substitute teacher accused of making a threatening telephone call to a school board member during a teachers' strike has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct.

Christopher Culp of Round Lake will receive 18 months of court supervision and must perform 25 hours of public service as part of this week's plea deal. A judge also ordered the 43-year-old Culp not to have any contact with the family of former Grayslake School District 46 board member Shannon Smigielski.

Culp was charged with phone harassment after a man called Smigielski in January during a teachers' strike and told her that he'd "hate to see what happens" to her daughter.

Smigielski says the call left her in fear for her children's lives. She resigned from the board in March.
