DNR releases turkey harvest numbers

Hunters in Illinois harvested a preliminary total of 14,133 wild turkeys during the 2013 spring season, including youth seasons.

In 2012, 15,941 birds were harvested.

YOUTH GOLF

Junior championship June 4 at Emerald Hill

The 25th Sterling Optimist Club junior golf championship will be held June 4 at Emerald Hill Golf Course.

There will be four boys and three girls divisions, and winners of each will advance to the district event June 10-12 at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur.

Cubs claim Cardinals prospect off waivers

The Chicago Cubs claimed minor-league reliever Eduardo Sanchez and sent him to Triple-A Iowa after the St. Louis Cardinals placed him on waivers.

The 24-year-old Sanchez had a 3.72 earned-run average in nine appearances at Triple-A Memphis. He made 43 appearances for the Cardinals in 2011 and 2012, compiling a 3.40 earned-run average.

Durant donating $1M to tornado victims

Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant is donating $1 million to the Red Cross tornado and disaster relief fund to aid the victims of massive storms that devastated the greater Oklahoma City region.

Also, the NBA and its players’ association announced Tuesday that they will donate $1 million to support the relief efforts.

Just one week after touting its strength to advertisers and declaring it wasn’t worried about new competition from Fox Sports, ESPN is cutting its staff.

The moves are part of an overall cost-cutting effort by ESPN parent Walt Disney Co.

Romo to miss OTAs after back surgery

Dallas quarterback Tony Romo will miss off-season workouts during the next 3 weeks after having what he called a “nagging” cyst removed from his back before the NFL draft.

Romo, who signed a 6-year, $108-million contract extension in March, could be back in time for the team’s mandatory minicamp beginning June 11.

Man pleads guilty to stabbing Bears fan

A Florida man pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing a Bears fan who had traveled to Jacksonville for a game between the Bears and the Jaguars last October.

Matthew Reid Hinson, 28, pleaded guilty today to second-degree murder of William Pettry and could get life in prison when he is sentenced May 28.

Guns, money stolen from Rice’s home

Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice was the victim of theft over the weekend, with two guns and $2,000 stolen from his Maryland home.
