Tornado touch down in Carroll County, storm warning expires

A tornado watch is in effect until 3 a.m. in Carroll County, where a twister touched down a mile east of Argo Fay, which is 10.5 miles south-southest of Mount Carroll. The watch also is in effect in nearby Lee, Ogle, Whiteside and Bureau counties, the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities reports.

A severe thunderstorm warning in effect in all five counties was lifted at 8:30 p.m. when the storm weakened and moved out of the area, the weather service said.

The storm originally was spotted 5 miles east of Fulton around 7:45 p.m., heading northeast at 40 mph. It spawned 60 mph winds and penny-sized hail, as well as the tornado. Both Whiteside and Carroll County sheriff's dispatchers say officers are too busy to comment at this time.
